Frequently Asked Questions

  • I am an “out-of-network” provider, which means if your insurance company offers out-of-network benefits, you should receive some reimbursement for the cost of therapy. Many insurance companies that provide out-of-network benefits cover between 50%-75% of the cost per session.  Contact your insurance company to find out about your specific coverage.

Here are some helpful questions to ask your insurance company to learn how much they will cover:

What is my co-insurance or copay for out-of-network sessions?

What is my out-of-network deductible and has it been met?

What is my out-of-pocket max and has it been met?

How many sessions does my plan cover per year?

What is the out-of-network allowed amount per individual therapy session (CPT code 90834) or family therapy session (CPT code 90847)?

  • On January 1, 2022, a ruling went into effect called the “No Surprises Act” which requires health care providers to render a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) for those who are not using insurance nor will seek reimbursement from insurance. The Good Faith Estimate works to show the cost of items and services that are reasonably expected for your health care needs. The estimate is based on information known at the time it is created and is good until January 1 of the following year. The Good Faith Estimate does not include any unknown or unexpected costs that may arise during treatment.

You have the right to receive a GFE document explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under Section 2799B-6 of the Public Health Service Act (PHSA), health care providers and health care facilities are required to inform individuals who are not enrolled in a plan or coverage or a Federal health care program, or not seeking to file a claim with their plan or coverage both orally and in writing of their ability upon request, or at the time of scheduling health care items and services to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” of expected charges.

You have the right to receive a GFE for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a GFE before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your GFE, you can dispute the bill.

While it is not possible for a clinicians to know, in advance, how many therapy sessions may be necessary or appropriate for a given person, this form provides an estimate of the cost of services provided. Your total cost of services will depend upon the number of psychotherapy sessions you attend, your individual needs and circumstances, and the type and amount of services that are provided to you. This estimate is not a contract and does not obligate you to obtain any services from the provider listed, nor does it include any services rendered to you that are not identified here.

  • Sessions are typically 45 minutes for individual therapy and 50 minutes for couples or family sessions. Sometimes longer sessions of 75 or 90 minutes are recommended for couples, family or EMDR sessions. We will decide together what the best length of session is for you.

  • Weekly sessions are most common and often recommended when starting therapy. Sometimes biweekly sessions are necessary or a better fit for your needs. We will discuss this together to determine what is best and how frequency of sessions will affect our work and therapy goals.

  • This depends on many factors including the reasons you are coming to therapy and your goals for the work. It is difficult to know until we have met and explored this together. Sometimes I do short term work that lasts around 10-12 sessions. More often, a longer process of therapy is necessary to reach desired goals.
